Frontier 5: Macintosh

Welcome to Frontier 5.1.2 Trial version for Macintosh!

You may only use the Trial version to evaluate Frontier. If you start doing work in it you must purchase one of the licenses from our price list.

Trial version limits

Trial version object databases are limited to seven megabytes. When a file grows beyond this size the Trial version will refuse to open it. This is enough space to do a real site, but as it grows you'll depend on the site management capabilities of Frontier, and then it's time to license the full software.

The Trial version is limited to three threads, so you can evaluate Frontier as a server, but to deploy, you'll need to get a license for the full software.

The Trial version expires on 9/8/98.

Getting started

The Frontier folder contains several items:

  • UserLand Frontier

This is the Frontier application. Just double-click to run it.

The first time you run Frontier it will ask for your name, initials, and organization.

  • Frontier.root

This is Frontier's object database. When Frontier launches, the Frontier.root will be opened automatically. It's best to keep the Frontier.root in the same folder as the Frontier application.

  • Website Tutorial

This website gets you up-and-running with Frontier website management. It's a hands-on tutorial which includes an index at the back so you can use it for later reference. Start with the page called "default.html" -- or jump right to it.

  • Extras

A system extension called the IdleTime Init is included in this folder. Read more about it.

  • UserLand Utilities

This folder contains several utility programs for Macintosh scripters.

    1. BarChart is a scriptable bar chart generator.

    2. MacBird is an editor for creating graphical interfaces for your Frontier scripts.

    3. uBase is a scriptable, fast, flat file database.

Where to go from here

While you are evaluating the Trial version, check the public Frontier 5 home page for news from UserLand and other Frontier developers.

There is also extensive documentation available for free download on the public site.

Support

Trial version users will not have access to UserLand's private support services for Frontier licensees. This is one of the benefits of becoming a licensee.

See the Frontier 5 site's list of independently-run Frontier-related mailing lists.
